It's a good thing the American troops saved the Iraqi people from Saddam, as they clearly are capable of doing a better job themselves. This is a picture of a prisoner being mistreated after being bitten by a dog.
Read an article on Slashdot yesterday which said the Irish Presidency had managed to "secure a qualified majority for a counter-proposal to the software patents directive."

Seems like the Irish, with their IT capacity and 'newly magically transformed' economy are getting a bit grubby on the money. Of course it's in their short term interest to make as much money off their capacity as possible, but that was a bad move I think.

I don't think software should be patentable unless it's truly original, and then only for a short period of time. Things change, everybody is learning from everybody, and this will only lead to more secrecy, which ultimately will slow things down. It'll give work to lawyers, but those we could've sent to Africa instead, having them grow food for some of the world's starving people.

Most of the innovations in the world have always come from either a person or small groups. What we'll get with this patent crap is a lot of big, unwieldy companies punching each other in the face as they're busy beating each other to the patent office. A lot of fighting, and little progress.
