Speaking of logistics
While we were in Mo i Rana last month, I bought (ordered) a new battery for my Nokia E 90. I'm not sure what the deal is, but that's a lot of room for a small battery.
The battery was plastered to the bottom of the box, where an A5 letter with "poppers" as internal packaging should do.

Was at the psychologists office today and we had a roundup-meeting with Hilde as well. We talked a bit and had a good time, while I was skribbling with pen on paper in between.

The week in review
This week has been OK, a bit tiring at times. Isak has been sick since Sunday evening, and he is still sick - but I guess somewhat better.. he's more active and responsive now.It has been very tiring for Hilde, where Isak wakes up several times at night and pukes and eats. As the doctor said, puking might be because the mucus from the nose-and-throat region gets swallowed.. on a lighter note, Hilde's sister says kids who puke get well faster.
I've had an OK week, some stress with work and tiring that Isak cries and is sick, which makes Hilde stressed as well. But, Hilde and I had a good chat the other day and I think I'm getting better too.
Some late evenings I still get the dry mouth / swallowing / breathing anxiety, and an evening or two ago it felt like I could die or something if I fell asleep, so I laid there, tried to relax and fall asleep and then a jolt hit me when I was about to go to dreamland. {Later.. and that happened repeatedly]
But, talking to the psychologist and getting to know that this is normal is comforting, and I know I have to work myself through things, however difficult it may be.
Today we went shopping at IKEA, and bought a big, fluffy rug (in moss-/olive-green) as well as orange and black towels, some kitchen and eating tools and misc. other things. When the furniture for the living and eating room arrives, we'll have an India-furniture style going.
I'm also thinking of getting two big framed flags (for Norway and India), which seems fitting. :)

Colors
ColorsIn January or February (I think) I talked to my psychologist about having a couple of seconds where I saw red/green light flashing (and nothing else, I think.. it might've been other colors too, but red/green was what I remembered). It was a weird and scary experience, I can tell you that much.
It's interesting that they ran this article now.
I guess you can see where the paranoia and grandeur kicks in, and how weird it can be with these conspiracy thoughts and being surveilled/broadcasted in some way.
This experience could be a movie some day. ;)

So.. LIP
I'm back on the ground in some ways, but still feel stressed and tired.I don't know if it is the disease or something else, but the half last year or so I've felt surveilled and manipulated. Where I am now, I know it seems far fetched, and it could just be me going into a negative cycle.
But, as these things go, I'd just like to say that my phone could have been eavesdropped/controlled (for a long time) and my computers also surveilled or controlled, and my input from the world (stuff I read and see on the net). I guess I've dumped enough of the threads that needed nesting to someone to make a rope and hang me with, but so be it. Accidents happen etc. So if something interesting happens in the future, I've probably said the wrong things or spoken publicly about something I shouldn't have.
Don't trust anything except what you can see me say in person. :)
That said, I'm having a hope that this could all resolve and be done with, and that I could get some sort of diagnosis on what are very real psychological issues. And that's perfect if you think in the paranoid sense, as it in many ways can discredit me.
I kind of jokingly thought I could go into politics, but where I am now.. if I get a diagnosis, I could go back to studies, and study something really interesting. Or, I could just continue working and fiddle with things on the side.
Art has begun to interest me more and more, so maybe something like that. But one has to make a living etc.
So we'll see. Now there's springrolls and cider.
Happy easter. ;)

Dogs are easily trained, for an OK years salary cost here in Norway a dog can be trained to assist a blind person too. We're probably going to build a website for something related to that soon BTW.

A busy day
We went to the priest's office today, for the talk before Isak gets baptised. The priest was a nice and wise man, who talked about being a Christian was about the relationship to God. And that man acquired the knowledge of what is sin and isn't.I've wondered lately, what else is there. Is there something beyond the physical boundaries. One can wonder..
He drawed while talking (upside down too), the image is scanned and below (I assume it's OK to publish it, since I got it after asking to keep it). He had a nice thread going through the conversation and went off track inbetween and made some interesting points. He also mentioned that it wasn't about indoctrination, I've had some thoughts about that before - but oh well.
But yes, a nice man - 65 years old. At the end I asked if he had read The Divine Comedy.. he said no, he had heard about it. But that his wife (who's into books) - probably had.
So, here's the drawing (click on it for a larger version):

On Sunday there's the baptizing, I guess afterwards - we'll eat cake - and maybe mom/mom-in-law can make some Waldorf-salad too.

Huss
So, suddenly the word huss popped into my mind. I googled it, but couldn't see anything definitive. I seemed to remember it was a word, so I went to m-w.com (a nice place to look up words), but it said it was only in the unabrigded dictionary.And that costs 5$ per month. I thought, why not. m-w.com is a fine service and I can pay a bit extra.
Is kinda sucks that information like that should be behind a paywall though.
I have a plan...
:)
In not so related news, I was at the therapists place today. We talked, and it came up that I.. I think I have a somewhat negative memory. Earlier I blogged that I've always been a bit dietetically challenged, but we were up in Trondheim this week and looked at pictures, and there were many from my childhood were I wasn't obese.
I wonder if it has been some sort of very deep depression or something else, that has left a permanent imprint of some sort of thought.
I also seem to vex between different modes or interpretations of reality (3 at the moment), where some wacky thoughts pop up, and then it could also just be coincidences of events.

Well, if you're cynical I guess the right thing to do would be to make sure the machine runs efficiently (damn the consequences), or maybe the idea is to trim the bush. Maybe it is a reasonable thing to live without a safety net over your head, or not go to the Opera in Gotham.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Money says
"Economists assert that the largest transfer of income will be as the older generation leaves wealth to the baby boomers. Inheritance has been estimated to make up 6% of the US GDP each year.[10] The current generation is wealthier than any generation before. This increase in wealth and inheritance indicates a rise of "old money" in American families. Stephen Haseler argues that America is becoming an inheritance culture in which much economic opportunity is from family inheritance and not personal achievement.[11]"
Is the timer for the music for the chair game gaining on the end?
For those squeamish of bloodshed, I guess one can hope that international trade and the internet will create the internation. One can wonder where the power will lie.
As we reap the environmental rewards of past development, we can live longer, happier and things like that.
I think things will turn out all right.

I got an iPod nano for Christmas from Hilde, and I haven't used it much so far. It looks good though, and I'm impressed they managed to get a video camera and playback in there. Nice design on the device too..I've had a Nokia E90 for some years now, and it works OK, but I'm kinda ready for a change.. the phone is a bit slow, but I guess that's the OS.
I see Spotify is available for the iPhone now, and that makes it a bit more tempting to go for an iPhone next. A lot of my friends have gone for an HTC phone, and that HTC uses Android is cool.
Oh well, for now it would be cool to have Spotify sync against my Nano, but I guess that is a pipe dream.

Evolution strikes again
"Their argument, in effect, was that the SYM is putting off traditional markers of adulthood—one wife, two kids, three bathrooms—not because he’s immature but because he’s angry. He’s angry because he thinks that young women are dishonest, self-involved, slutty, manipulative, shallow, controlling, and gold-digging. He’s angry because he thinks that the culture disses all things male. He’s angry because he thinks that marriage these days is a raw deal for men."http://city-journal.com/2008/18_4_darwinist_dating.html
That's what happens when you experiment, I guess. I like the traditional roles, that the man is the breadwinner and the woman is at home. Or perhaps not like, but the roles are familiar and predictable.
I'm not saying women are less capable of doing a good job at the workplace (raising and nurturing kids in a good way with good results is one great feat and I've met women in prominent positions doing their jobs well), but it is the natural (as in, nature's way) order of things. Hilde (my better half), is mostly the boss at home. Boss, as in, she takes initative to doing things in our home (and I say, "uh ... OK" ;)), and often arranges social events. No, I was only kidding, it's not that way. We talk and discuss things, but she likes to deal with those things and I play along.
I've gotten a bit better at the homebase thing myself, stepping into the softer manly role. After all, she has a job too and nobody is a superhero.
Times they are a-changin' - that's for sure. Maybe we're getting exactly what we're wishing for?
Maybe the feminists got a little more than they bargained for, or maybe it is just something that needs to be balanced out over time.. I hope for the latter.
Anyway, I find it interesting how we try to come to terms with evolution. If we take evolution's history, things started out as little not very intelligent organisms. What's been happening for the last thousands of years is nothing more than us collectively becoming a bigger organism. The tribe, the kingdom, the state, the .. what? :)
I wonder what they'll be saying about this 300 years from now.

Random spillage (correct me if I'm wrong)
Last last night (around 3 AM) Hilde (my girl), Kaye (my bro) and I came back from 2 weeks in Spain. Also in the gang was Britt (friend of Hilde, but she had to leave after a week).We spent the last week with Hilde's folks as well, which was a good time. It's good to get to know her family and get some roots (for our flower to grow ;)). :)
Anyway, there was a lot of time to think and relax on the trip, and for better or worse, I think a lot.
Religion, politics, existence are things that I often mull over, to the point of being like a bulldog that never lets go. Picking up bits and pieces of information on the net as I go along. :)
Anyway, what I'm thinking is that religion is a system which in many ways has been the basis of modern society. Rules, rituals and laws which bring order to chaos. The chaos of survival of the fittest, the selfish gene etc. Structure to the slow burn that evolution is.
I learned a bit about Christianity in school, and although I understand and respect the basic rules, some of those rules are outdated as well. It's like a artist called Ravi said (something along the lines of) in a song, "navigating by old maps is insane".
The bible is full of good stories and metaphors that can teach us something about life, and I suspect that with a bit of experience in that field know that there is no God or Devil, Christianity is a tool devised to give people meaning and hope (and perhaps to give "the wise" the control they need). I guess there is some good in most religions, it's just about picking the right things. Maybe YOU should start one of your own? Nirvana sounds like a good idea to me. ;)
Heaven and hell, the carrot and the stick.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions they say, and that is often true. The US plays cop in the world, and steamrolls Saddam under the excuse of avenging the 9/11 attack. Too busy taking care of others business to take care of their own (financial collapse anyone?)
I'm not saying Saddam is a good guy, and maybe these smoke and mirror games are required to keep the public at ease and prevent things from escalating, but that's basically saying that "we know what's good for you, now take this sweet pill."
Maybe these things are just bumps in the road towards A Better Place (TM), but I can't help thinking about it.
I read the other day that the universe could stop expanding.. or "working" or whatever in 50 billion years. The basic laws of physics implied that.
Well, isn't it time to stop the bickering and work together to bend the laws of nature so that we can ourselves be gods, and be able to manipulate everything?
I saw the Matrix some years ago with a friend (Erik) and he kinda got the point, it took a while (me being hung up on details) before I understood the metaphor. The most of us are living in an illusion, being born into it and being none the wiser.
Anyway, enough rambling. Just had to say something. :-)

Blog frequency
You readers of my weblog have probably noticed a burst of blog entries lately. I don't know exactly why that is, but I'm feeling energetic and creative.I know friends are reading this blog, and that's enough for me really. The reason I find Facebook so interesting is that you get to see what's happening with people you know, it's entertainment, but I think it's more edible, human and real than what you get on the TV. It's fresh. :)
Those who know me, know that I'm not that much of an outgoing person, and that I like to think. And talking about things (thinking out loud) is useful when it comes to processing thoughts; blogging also puts pressure on the person who blogs, as anyone can comment and call you on bullshit, or link to you and say that's a load of crock.
Anyway, the reason I started this entry is another blog entry about blogging:
http://www.mpdailyfix.com/2006/06/w_why_blog_post_frequency_...
which has a lot of interesting points. I think my goals for this blogging thing is just to speak what's on my mind and be honest. And blog when I feel like it.

Top 10
Every once in a while I like to have a look at statistics, and these are the top-ten countries for visitors to blogologue.com:Norway
Denmark
Germany
Turkey
Belgium
United Kingdom
Australia
Japan
Canada
Netherlands
all interesting countries and places I'd like to go. I think Australia, Japan, Turkey and Canada are the only places I haven't been yet. And Turkey might come up soon..
1.4% of my visitors are running Linux, and there's even one visitor who's using the operating system GNU - I wonder whether that's Debian GNU/Linux or maybe something running Hurd? :)

Strip club and gay bar
So, I went out with 2 girls on Friday. We were having beers and I mentioned I knew some strippers that were working.We ended up going to a place called Diamond, where we watched a couple of girls dance. As well as meeting Maria and Anne.
Maria is mentioned here btw:
http://www.seher.no/cm/SeHer/Kjendisnytt/Norske/1.599716
anyway, we saw some shows, had a beer and moved on to a place called Garage. Drank some more and we went to another place called London.
When entering London I noticed that there was almost only guys there. Turns out the girls took med to a gay bar. I was even groped on the way out!
That was an interesting Friday...

Idling by
Today I decided the day was mostly for resting. There's a lot going on at the moment with business and all that so it is nice to catch a break every once in a while. Just look at the to-do list and blissfully ignore it and reschedule issues.Towards the end of the week I'll be going for a date with a girl named Monica (she's a cutie) and we'll have some chow before we go to a concert with Ska Cubano. Didn't like their music straight off the bat, but I'll get their album and listen to it a bit more since she suggested we go to this concert. She's half Vietnamese and I gotta say, that worked out well. :)
Then there are meetings to come as well, where we will lay plans for the future of some of our local offerings to the SMB market here in Norway. So far it's been "play by ear" (which has worked) but now we'll try planning and executing that plan. I feel good about it, we'll have to make commitments and work to make sure deadlines are met. Will be some good food and entertainment during the days we have meetings too, and I've heard rumors about an English breakfast which should cure any ailments we contract..

Lucky
After a long day it is time to go to bed. I got nice presents, good food (beef, cream marinated potatoes ++) and good drinks (wine, cognac). Feel very fortunate to be able to share this time with the family and get stuffed; not all people are so fortunate.The next couple of days it will be visiting family and friends and probably some more work on the Issue Dealer. The mail handling gateway is working nicely now and soon enough it should be an important, integral part of what the system can offer.
Oh so tired, and so happy. Good night. :)

Merry Christmas!
Sitting here up at 5 in the morning on Christmas day, as I went to sleep somewhat early yesterday. I've chugged down some goodies already and just waiting for the coffee to finish.Anyway, hope all of you have a merry Christmas, with family, friends & all the gifts. Look forward to seeing my brother who's coming up from the capital today, it will be fun to see mom's expression when she sees him, as she thinks he'll be staying at home this year. :)

Tired
Well, we had our Christmas dinner yesterday which ended up being quite a party. We started around 7 in the evening and kept it going until 9 o'clock the next morning.We ate some good food and had a lot of good drinks, amongst other White Russian, Irish Coffee (at different places, the latter being superb), Rum & Coke, Gin & Tonic and others.
Met some girls at the last nightclub who joined us for a "nachspiel" - the party that ended at 9 in the morning.
Today we went out in the evening, had some pizza, a couple of beers and shot some pool. Stig is nearly unbeatable in pool but it was a good time nonetheless.
And I met a sweet girl named Toril with which I had some fun.. good times.

Yawn
Woke up a couple of hours ago; went to bed early after having a couple of beers and a glass of wine with friends. Got sleepy after drinking so I just called it a night. The exercise is taking its toll as well.Sitting up now wondering what to do.. don't feel like doing anything.. just relaxing. Maybe reply to some emails, I dunno.
Reviewing my statistics it turns out there were 7000 unique visitors last month to the blog, up 2000 from the 5000 in October. Not sure what kind of visitors they are, as they don't leave a lot of comments. Or maybe the comment system is too difficult?
Anyway. Sunday I'll be going out with Stig (Nidelven IT) and Chris (Nidelven IT Consulting) and we'll have a traditional Christmas dinner with lutefisk, pinnekjøtt, ribbe and various drinks. Look forward to that - and the best part is we can get the company to pay for it.
And Firefox just corrected me, saying that Christmas is spelled with a capital C. That's C as in Cool.

Sticking to it (vision is easy, execution is hard)
Sitting here drinking coffee and thinking about things. Everything seems so simple these days, and what I've worked for the last couple of years is coming to fruition.I said to myself that I was going to slow down at some point, but now I know I'll be working until I go to the grave. It is so much fun, and rewarding, to see what you've worked on be successful and having people in your network thrive as well.
The next couple of months I'll be working on improving our hosting platform, and developing the Issue Dealer further - I'll cut back on consulting to a minimum and just work at my own pace, enjoying it.
I'll also be increasing the amount of exercise.. so far I'm working out every other day - the goal is to work out every day after a while, just gotta ease into it I guess.
Ahh, life is good.

Tips for grabs
As Vinay was driving us around yesterday and we stopped at an intersection, a kid came up to us, selling q-tips (you know, those things you clean your ears with).Earlier I saw a badly damaged guy (limping around) trying to sell the same stuff, but unfortunately he was to far away and I didn't get to buy anything.
I was happy to buy a pack from the kid. If he makes 10%, 20%, 50% off what I paid - OK, no problem. It is peanuts to me and it is great to see people helping themselves by helping others. Sell me practical stuff that I need and I'll do business with anyone.
The intersections must be a great place to sell too. Sometimes you have to wait for 120 or 180 seconds for the light to turn green, and if someone wants to do you a service while you wait, why not? Cool.

My brother's store was apparently the planned target of a robberyhttp://www.dagbladet.no/nyheter/2006/09/22/477569.html
that's what the guys suspected of planning terrorism against embassies in Oslo are saying - that they were planning to rob that store, and not perform terrorist attacks.
Interesting times..
[Later..] My brother thinks he's lucky they were stopped (as being robbed isn't something anyone longs for) while my dad (who's a police officer) thinks this plan to rob a store could be a desperate strategy by the defence to avoid their clients being punished under the terror law.

Ah, how time flies by. Turned 26 today, I'm 1/3 of the way there or something like that. ;)Got myself a new laptop as a birthday present, an Acer Travelmate which is neat, lightweight and more powerful than the desktop I have.
Not sure I'll be using it that much though, it'll be mostly for working on the road. Will probably get some more lifetime out of it that way as well, as my experience is that laptops wear out easily.
It even works with my Treo, so I can use the phone as a GPRS modem - that'll come in handy for sure.

Weird dreams are made of these
I woke up last night from an annoying dream. I was picking up/handling a crab which kept stinging me with some sort of prodding tongue. As I kept handling the crab it lost legs and ended up with no legs, but still kept trying to prod me with its tongue.Weird.. so I looked up crabs and here it gets interesting:
http://www.dreammoods.com/dreamthemes/animals.htm#Crab
"To see a crab in your dream, signifies you perseverance and tenacity. On an extreme note, you maybe be too clingy and dependant and hanging on to a hopeless endeavor. Crabs are also symbolic of your irritable personality."
Which makes sense I guess.

Fortune
I've installed fortune on my computer, and pop up terminals all day long. Just now I got a huge fortune which I was about to ignore (...) but then I stopped to read it. Funney :)Q: How many lawyers does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Whereas the party of the first part, also known as "Lawyer", and the party of the second part, also known as "Light Bulb", do hereby and forthwith agree to a transaction wherein the party of the second part shall be removed from the current position as a result of failure to perform previously agreed upon duties, i.e., the lighting, elucidation, and otherwise illumination of the area ranging from the front (north) door, through the entryway, terminating at an area just inside the primary living area, demarcated by the beginning of the carpet, any spillover illumination being at the option of the party of the second part and not required by the aforementioned agreement between the parties.
The aforementioned removal transaction shall include, but not be limited to, the following. The party of the first part shall, with or without elevation at his option, by means of a chair, stepstool, ladder or any other means of elevation, grasp the party of the second part and rotate the party of the second part in a counter-clockwise direction, this point being tendered non-negotiable. Upon reaching a point where the party of the second part becomes fully detached from the receptacle, the party of the first part shall have the option of disposing of the party of the second part in a manner consistent with all relevant and applicable local, state and federal statutes. Once separation and disposal have been achieved, the party of the first part shall have the option of beginning installation. Aforesaid installation shall occur in a manner consistent with the reverse of the procedures described in step one of this self-same document, being careful to note that the rotation should occur in a clockwise direction, this point also being non-negotiable. The above described steps may be performed, at the option of the party of the first part, by any or all agents authorized by him, the objective being to produce the most possible revenue for the Partnership.

The Apple RSS debacle
I'm following the rather interesting posts around the blogosphere about Apple bastardizing the RSS format .. and all I can say is: it's not a standard, so what could you expect?Start using Atom instead which is clearly defined and you'll avoid things like this - there's no doubt how things should be implemented there.
I cluck to myself when I read about Dave Winer flaming Apple for screwing up RSS.. well I'd like to see him get Scoble and Microsoft to go for an open, unscrewed file format for their Office suite... :D

Finally nailed the encoding bit
I've nailed a long-standing bug in the Issue Dealer, which has caused some problems for me (and probably some others as well) - it's related to encoding.. for a while I thought Python was a tricky language when it came to character encodings, but it was really my ignorance that was the culprit..Updating (upgrading) the Issue Dealer would wreck havoc on issues with non-ascii characters, even if it's been running with utf-8 for a while, this was related to the way updates were being done and how versions of objects were being tracked - some old code that set the wrong version for objects made the update code convert what was utf to utf using the iso-8859-1 encoding.. ahh. Oh well.
I found two great pages about encoding as well, which should be required reading for any python programmer these days:
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/Unicode.html
http://effbot.org/zone/unicode-objects.htm
the first article talks about encoding in general and helped me get relaxed about it all, the second just hammered in the points about encoding in Python.

Sniff
I've been spending lazy days down on "Marinen" lately since we've been having such good weather, and just enjoying the scenery, people and animals that are there.And every now and then I take a picture, here's one of a pup that ran around for a good 10 minutes exploring the area:
it's so great to just lay down in the grass; the guy that usually drives around cutting the gras hasn't been there in a while, so it's long and soft too, as you can see.

Where to go next
I'm considering spending 6 months outside of Norway next year, before I begin studying 'higher education' here back home.I've basically got three requirements about the place I'm going to, which are that:
1) It has to be varm
2) It has to facilitate learning of a language (preferably spanish, german or french)
3) It has to be provide good internet connectivity
Other requirements that aren't that important, but regarded as positive are:
Low cost of living
I've already been to most of Europe, so something outside of that (Africa, Asia, America, Australia) is interesting. Russia isn't that interesting, as it is 1) too cold. :)
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Shake, rattle and roll
After having some great fun dancing at the Vommol-festival, I've been considering taking some dancing-lessons, to learn swing and whatever it is they call the other main styles of dancing.It's not easy to find anything on Google, Kvasir or the regular 'search spots' however, so I guess I'll just have to ask people and hope for a reply in the network effect.

Tricked
The doorbell rang earlier, and a teenage girl stood outside when I opened. She handed me a note where it said that she was mute and deaf, and that she sold pictures for 100 kroner (15 dollars) per piece.
I'm a bit sceptic when it comes to these kinds of sales, but she seemed like a kind person (we were able to communicate by reading lips and some improvised sign language), and although I don't collect these kinds of pictures, I thought my mom would appreciate one.
Mom has a dog, Nikita, which is .. 5 or 6 years old now I guess. Nikita has no pups (which I think is a bit sad, as that's much of what life is about) so I picked the picture above. It'll surprise mom, and probably make her happy, maybe even inspire her to get Nikita a mate. I'll let you know how it goes. ;)

Reduced
I've been working with web applications for a while, and lately I've been adapting Kupu for a project we've been doing together with Aktivnett, providing users with an easy-to-use through-the-web interface for editing documents. Kinda like Word, just simpler.In the process of adapting and using Kupu, I got some complaints that it was loading slowly, so I had to make some changes in the code to make it load faster. There are two things that really slow down the loading of web applications, and they are 1) size 2) the number of files loaded per page.
Both issues are easy enough to handle, I first tried reducing the size of the scripts using a customized version of Rhino (Mozilla's Javascript engine) but that one altered the names of 'internal' attributes as well, which broke some code. Rhino also depends on having a Java Runtime Enviroment installed, which isn't easy to do on all platforms (I guess Sun are pretty anal about their legal stuff). I looked around a bit more, to see if I could find a script that compresses Javascript, but nothing was available (in source, or for free) so here's something I wrote up:
--------------------------------- Start compress.py
!/usr/bin/env python
import sys, re
one_line_comment = re.compile(r'^\s*//.*$', re.M)
trailing_comment = re.compile(r'//(\w|\s)*$', re.M)
multi_line_comment = re.compile(r'^\s*/\*.*?\*/', re.M | re.S)
whitespace_after_separator = re.compile(r';\s*', re.M | re.S)
whitespace_after_opening_bracket = re.compile(r'{\s*', re.M | re.S)
starting_whitespace = re.compile(r'^\s*', re.M | re.S)
def strip(data):
"""Processes the data, removing comments and unecessary whitespace."""
data = one_line_comment.sub('', data)
data = trailing_comment.sub('', data)
data = multi_line_comment.sub('', data)
data = whitespace_after_separator.sub(';', data)
data = whitespace_after_opening_bracket.sub('{', data)
data = starting_whitespace.sub('', data)
return data.strip()
for file in sys.argv[1:]:
data = open(file).read()
data = strip(data)
open(file, 'w').write(data)
---------------------------------
which is simple enough and doesn't break Javascript code. This python script reduced the common scripts in Kupu from 350 to 200k, which is a lot. Reducing the number of file loads should be easy enough as well, just concatenate the scripts in the order they would be loaded, and voila. One web application loading a bit faster. :)
BTW, the compress script is in the public domain. And server-side deflating would reduce the script by another 100-150k.

Progressing through the times
I haven't had much to write about lately, as I've been busy with different things, and in general been happy about life. Seeing that things are the way they are, and that history repeats itself, I just try to enjoy it while I'm here.It's great to see the success of Open Source, namely projects like Firefox, and lesser known projects like Python (http://www.python.org), Zope (http://www.zope.org) and Plone (http://www.plone.org) and their adoption everywhere.
The success of Open Source may be hampered by the DMCA ("A matter of internal security: the age-old cry of the oppressor.") but these things will probably even out, and possibilites will arise in the crossroads.. people don't fight with swords anymore, in our modern part of the world; instead we fight by proxy. Playing games, climbing the ladder, cutting souls through social fabric.
It's all about control.
Ack. If I only had something interesting to write about.

An ode to mail
I've been forwarding receipts and such via mail to Stig, our eco-wiz. They sold a pack of postage-paid envelopes at the post office last time I was there, so I thought why not. Maybe a bit more expensive than usual, but hey, it's convenient.Regular mail has been around for a long time, and to this day I haven't experienced a lost mail, either way. And it ain't hard to send something via mail either, even if it's a service run by a state monopoly. You send mail via a mailbox, and you receive it in your mailbox.
On the other hand, there's taxes. A bureaucratic jungle with no apparent end, and the people who work at the tax office don't know much about it either. So we need savvy explorers of bureaucratic jungles to help us out with it. But it could've been soo much simpler.
What if paying taxes could be closer to paying for a service?
Maybe it will be eventually. Here's hoping. :)

Bike repair
After considering fiddling with the bike myself I went to the shop where I bought the bike instead, and let them have a look at it.Turns out the rear axle was broken, which isn't supposed to happen. It has covered around 500 miles since I bought it at the end of last summer, so it could be wear and tear.
It's a good bike, the Scott Aurora, but I guess most things that come off a production line have some compromises.. so I bought a set of new metal pedals today (and will be getting grips, extra handle bars etc.), a bucket, a scrub, a cloth and one of those inflate-tire-from-a-can things and tomorrow I'll be scrubbing down the bike, changing pedals and applying new oil.
The weather this week has been excellent, 10-20 degrees celsius, which is unusual I guess, for April. I look forward to biking down to the sea, and maybe a lake every now and then to go fishing. Not to mention going down to the beach to get some sun. Ahh, the good life. :)

Summer wheels
After some hassles I managed to get the summer wheels back on the bike; I think I'll be using a complete set of wheels (rim, tube, tire) from now on.. changing the tire itself can be a pain.The summer tires are a bit wider than the winter tires, so I discovered (with the good help of a friend who's done his share of work on bikes) that the rim hub was loose, making the back tire touch the frame when a lot of pressure is applied to the cog wheel.
I initially discovered this as I was riding back from the gym yesterday, taking an alternate, steep route past the University (overlooking Lerkendal Stadium, nice). Was surprised by some light rain as well, so I'm a bit sniffly today. :)
There's a lot of things I should get for the bike now, two rear rims, one front rim and two tubes; I'd also like to try one of those tire-patch-in-a-can things, to see if they work. Think the cheapest ones are 4-5$, and if they work, it's obviously a lot easier (and more fun) than patching a tire.

Shaping up
Having enjoyed many cozy moments around christmas time, I'm starting to get back into shape. Yesterday I went to the gym, ran 3 miles (that's a lot for a big guy like me ;), did some weights and biked for 7 miles and finally did some sit-ups.Feeling a bit weak today, guess that's the way it should be as the body rebuilds itself.
Also got myself a new bike pump yesterday; I normally just stop by the gas station to pump the wheels, but that's going to be hard since the bike's got a flat. Convenient timing for the flat too, I was just about to change to summer-wheels.. Looking forward to the summer, will be spending more time at the beach now that it's a bit more accessible.
Oh well.

Walking
Went for a walk today, down to the river Nidelven, which was relaxing as usual.It's a 15 minute walk from the new place, which means that the football stadium is about 10 minutes from here, should get to see more games by Rosenborg this season. They've won a lot the last years; recently they won the norwegian championship in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and the cup championship in 1992, 1995, 1999 and 2003.

The players are starting to get a bit old however, I think the average age of the 'a-team' players is 30 years, which means they've got a lot of experience, but starting to lack physically.
The new head coach (formerly assistant coach, and before that goal keeper for Rosenborg) has quite a task ahead, but I guess it will be like driving a car, there's a lot of culture and structure in Rosenborg, and they've got some cash in the bank.

Good food
Having moved to a new place, it's a good time to change some routines around; been fairly busy the last 4-5 months so the types of food I've been eating has been the easy ones. :)I've found a couple of quick and easy meals that taste good, are easy to make and healthy. One is buying pre-sliced salad (I suck at cutting and mixing salad), feta cheese in olive oil, tomatoes and bread straight from the bakery which takes about 5 minutes to make and is surprisingly good.
Another one is baguettes with cheese, tomatoes, green salad, slices of chicken/turkey and pesto (very good).
I think we're missing out on a lot of good food here in Norway, most of the food here is boiled or fried until most of the taste is gone, and we don't have easy access to fresh fruit and vegetables like they have for example in southern Europe.
There are a couple of stores that have high quality groceries however, for example Ultra and Smart Club. Smart Club has pre-packaged Sushi as well, which I've looked at but not bought yet. :) Hmm, should probably buy those the next time I'm there.

RSS 2.0 Relax NG schema
There's a schema for RSS 2.0. Nice.I've always liked RSS for its simplicity, some data formats have a 'let's show everyone how clever we are' and 'we didn't really know what we were creating it for' feel to them, while RSS is a bit more practical, usable for 'real world' stuff.
I guess the RSS feed on the weblog publisher should be updated to version 2.0 as well, but it's working now, so that's something we can put off for a while.

It's a big sandbox
Having my brother visiting is always nice, there's something about family and close friends that's so relaxing. Anyway, he's got two kids, almost the same age, that are always.. negotiating. It's funny to see how they can be fighting over one small thing, say a shovel, just because one of them wants it, and there are lots of other things to play with.I've pondered long, and hard, about teamwork. I think teamwork is about accepting other people's role working towards a goal, and accepting that each member contributes their share to the common goal. It's simple really.
Getting over ego, and understanding that everything you're saying is likely to misunderstood in the beginning, as you're building a relationship, and that trust takes some time to develop.
I started thinking about this as I was watching a program on the TV about genetics, and how flies have much in common with humans. Male flies would behave aggressively when there was a female around, or when they were defining territory.
It's a good thing we're developed. Or are we?

Had a couple of beers with Ragnar yesterday, before we went to the studio to listen to their (Peeker's) album-in-progress. Interesting to see how the whole process works. It is Øysteins first production so it's a slow process, but it's getting there. And it's good. Really good.
Two songs in particular, Blind Spectator and Certain Zero, are promising, and a third, a long song spanning 4-5 genres (and sounding good!) is also interesting.
I'm trying to pitch them the idea of licensing one or more songs under a CC license, and it's something they'll be doing I think. :)

More XOXO and Relax NG
Been doing some more work on XOXO, on the validation end of things. The schema (xoxo.rng) looks like this so far:<?xml version="1.0"?>
<grammar xmlns="http://relaxng.org/ns/structure/1.0">
<start>
<ref name="ol"/>
</start>
<define name="ol">
<element name="ol">
<optional>
<attribute name="compact">
<choice>
<value>compact</value>
</choice>
</attribute>
</optional>
<oneOrMore>
<element name="li">
<optional>

<optional>

</optional>
<optional>
<ref name="ol"/>
</optional>
</interleave>
</optional>
</element>
</oneOrMore>
</element>
</define>
</grammar>
The schema above uses recursion (via reference tags) and will validate the following XML (xoxo.xml):
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<ol>
<li>Test
<ol compact="compact">
<li>text..</li>
</ol>
</li>
</ol>
as valid XOXO, using the Jing validator for Relax NG (java -jar jing.jar xoxo.rng xoxo.xml). I also wanted to check out how DTDs generated from Relax NG looked, using Trang, but that hasn't been possible yet (because Trang can't find the SAX libraries). Should be interesting to see how the DTDs turn out once that's fixed.

XOXO and XFN
Tantek Çelik, Kevin Marks and Mark Pilgrim have been working on an outlining standard called XOXO, which I've just joined.It's important to have information available in an accessible format, creating standards, like FOAF is for the commons, however, FOAF files aren't as easily accessible as for example a webpage.. That's where XOXO and XFN is going, leveraging well-defined and widespread standards like XHTML to create pieces of information that can be interpreted by any device that understands XHTML, and at the same time it's distinct enough to be parsed by sites like the weblog database Technorati.
Here's an example of how the blogroll can be implemented, using XOXO:
<ul class="xoxo blogroll">

And taxes
So, it's about time to do the taxes again. Fortunately I've got some help filling them out. That's one thing I feel good about doing, paying the taxes and contributing to the commons. :) That said, it will be nice to see how the internet will affect the government in the future, how decisions will be made and what kind of information will be available. Can't help thinking the government is big, slow and inefficient.Time to apply for exams in social science and math as well, which I look forward to. It's a lot easier to get motivated for an exam, where there's a chance of working on a 'real' task. Maybe not a 'real' task, but at least a challenge.
That's the issue with school I think, a missing balance between acquiring knowledge, and using it.

On the horizon
Some thoughts on what's to come in the weblog:
- Comments
- Trackbacks
- Creative Commons license selection
- Categories
[Later..]
- Pings
Comments and trackbacks are an interesting topic, the way it's done today doesn't scale well (discussions over 25 comments are hard to follow), and it's spam-prone.
There were some discussions on the #joiito channel about integrating blogs with NNTP. Interesting idea, but I think we've got everything we need in HTTP, HTML, CSS and RSS.
It could be an idea to skip comments altogether, and only use trackbacks, that way, there would be a higher threshold for spam -- requiring a blog of sorts to be able to comment. It would also make the spam process more visible. A kind of blogologue... :)
This comment/traceback/spam thing ties in with identity too. Hmm.
BTW, this is structured text rendered as HTML. :]

Making things accessible
Turns out the RSS feed for this site had been seen as HTML by those who clicked on it, Zope does that by default, makes things into HTML, if the contents has tags of some sort. Anyway, that's fixed now (it says text/xml instead of text/html).I think a lot of users that click on the RSS link have problems understanding what it is, so I've added a comment on the top of the feed that goes like this:
<!--
This is an RSS feed, you'll need a tool
that understands RSS to make use of it.
-->
Now, I wonder if there is a list somewhere, of RSS-enabled applications, to point to..

Python's pleasant surprise of the day
I was adding version checking on classes (for dynamically updating instances), and was about to create a small comparison function, for comparing sequences, when I thought of checking if it had already been implemented. Turns out it has been, things like '(0,9,18) > (0,9,20)' evaluate as they should (to false) in Python. Nice. :)[Permalink] [By morphex] [Programming (Atom feed)] [04 Jan 22:35 GMT+1]

Quality in quantity
It's a custom here in Norway to attend parties on the 2nd day after christmas eve. So, Christmas eve, 2nd after christmas eve and new years eve are parties. I think norwegians have a 'quality' relationship towards drinking, since it's cold outside large parts of the year, people stay inside their houses/apartments when they can. And when people meet up at larger social events, they need a couple of drinks to 'defrost' and socialize.French people, on the other hand, drink just about all the time, but not as much as norwegians do when they drink. Atleast I drank frequently with my friends while living in France (we had this wine-seller come to our apartment and ordered cases of wine at a time). And that worked too. After coming back to Norway I drank red wine fairly frequently, and then ended up drinking a bottle of wine maybe once every 2 or 3 months.
People are habitual creatures, and it does take time to adapt to new enviroments. That's one of the best things about people I think, the ability to change, adapting to the enviroment. People are like accounting: for better or worse, creative or not, you'll have a balance.
For many life is a simple game. It is, isn't it? :)

Time to spin
It's getting colder here, we got some snow for christmas. :) I'm wondering whether I should keep biking around, or just start taking spinning classes at the gym. Spinning is nice, works up a good sweat and I guess is good for the entire body, not just the legs..A new release of the Googolizer is available too, which now works across years, with a percentage increase/decrease per month, which is useful.
Interesting how weblogs also turn into a knowledge management system of sorts, find myself using the system as a public notepad, useful for keeping track of links and knowledge. If you're a user of Mozilla Firebird, I'd recommend trying out linky, a tool that opens a selection of links, or all the links on a page, in tabs. Very useful. :)

Experts exchange
A fact about open source software is that every day thousands of people volunteer their time to answer questions in mailinglists and web discussion boards. But sometimes important questions go unanswered, we believe, not because people don't know the answers but because the time involved in researching or writing up an answer is more than what people can give away for free.
We believe if there were an easy way for answers to time-intensive questions to be paid for.. then these questions would be answered and more people and companies could make a better living supporting open source software.

Keyboards
You learn something new every day. Today I learned to kick the habit of laying the headphones on top of the keyboard. I find myself listening to music most of the time when I'm by the computer, so laying the headphones on top of the keyboard is a natural and convenient thing when I'm away from the computer.
However, some keyboards are softer than others, which I learned today, on the #joiito channel, when I managed to spam the channel with around 25 lines of 4's before being k-lined. It was a new keyboard.
Hope it was as refreshing for everybody there as it was embarrasing for me. ;p

Change of weather
The weather has changed completely here, a week ago it was freezing cold and covered with snow; now it's bare and fairly warm. 5 or 10 degrees celsius perhaps.
Looks like the locals are getting interested in Zope, just had an inquiry from a fairly big and old company regarding Zope and E-Commerce, which is interesting. Companies are generally interested in the Open Source phenomenon, and want to learn how to 'work in the system'.
I'm trying to formulate in clear economic terms why Open Source works, and why it will work in the long run. Something along the lines of software costs next to nothing to replicate, software in most forms are simply manifestations of models people already know. I'm growing more and more convinced that software and methods described in it is everybody's property. Software is not a finite resource. The value of software lies in its applicability, and its applicability is based on how widely used the software is and/or how widely used the standards the software relies on are.
People are a finite resource. So is time. People need jobs, and people need people to make software work in different enviroments.
Just a thought. :)

Adding dimensions
Eric Raymond has updated the FUD entry in the jargon file:
[In 2003, SCO sued IBM in an action which, among other things, alleged SCO's proprietary control of Linux. The SCO suit rapidly became infamous for the number and magnitude of falsehoods alleged in SCO's filings. In October 2003, SCO's lawyers filed a memorandum in which they actually had the temerity to link to the web version of this entry in furtherance of their claims. Whilst we appreciate the compliment of being treated as an authority, we can return it only by observing that SCO has become a nest of liars and thieves compared to which IBM at its historic worst looked positively angelic. —ESR]

This was a long and hard decision but it seems to make sense considering that my major goal with this release was to build a distributed reputation system and very advanced RSS aggregator. Since most of these features were locked up in NewsMonster PRO this kind of defeated the whole purpose.
I'm hopeful that more people will take advantage of this and help build up the reputation system.

Autumn musings
It's getting closer to winter here in Norway, the tree outside looks a bit sleepy, weighed down by its yellow leaves, preparing to sleep through the winter.. We had our first flakes of snow yesterday, they swirled through the air and disappeared a couple of seconds after they landed on the ground. The setting reminds me of a December in France, where I was working with two friends on a project. We shared a flat in an area called Cap d'Antibes and had a lot of good times.. Erik being a social creature and Thomas a very talented cook.
It just started snowing again, feels good to sit inside, being warm and comfortable. Haven't bought those winter wheels for the bike yet, have to get that done tomorrow.. the shop I'm going to has a website that could use a brush-up and some features, should try to get ahold of the manager while I'm there to see if we can offer them a service. They also sell skies; bikes and skies. That's a good combination, as they're both seasonal products. They say norwegians are born with skies on, that's true for some, but not me. ;) I did some skiing as a kid, didn't enjoy it much. Maybe I should try again?
I wonder why there aren't more companies encouraging biking to work, and maybe even as a part of the job. I know I wouldn't have been able to keep up with the pace we're going at if I hadn't been in good physical condition. Say a company sponsors 500 dollars on each employee for a bike with around-the-year accessories, that could be easily recouped on less people being sick, and more productive and balanced overall...
The ground is white now. I'm gonna go make myself a cup of tea.

Oops, good thing Gentoo is transparent
Setting up the DSS video server I accidentally deleted the /sbin directory. That's usually a big mistake.. However, I asked hyth on the #gentoo freenode channel for help and he provided me with this script:
#!/bin/sh for pkg in $(find /var/db/pkg -name CONTENTS); do if [ "$(grep "obj /sbin/" $pkg )" != "" ]; then echo $pkg; fi; done
..which lists all the packages that have files in the /sbin directory. It worked, and after re-arranging the order in which the packages were installed (ldconfig from the glibc package has to be installed right after gcc, obviously ;) the system worked again.

Streamin'
One of our clients are interested in streaming on-demand audio and media content, so I got the task of finding a suitable provider (either us or somebody else). I've waded through various software options, and it looks like we can offer MP3 audio streaming and MPEG4/QuickTime video streaming using Open Source tools. The video streaming (Darwin Streaming Server) was a royal pain to set up, I guess most people don't build it from source anymore..
So, I know we can offer streaming, if you know of any good (fair price, high quality and stability) providers, let me know.

You have to be a good slave..
..to be a good master. I skimmed a piece from Wealth Bondage earlier, and made a mental note of blogging it, so there you are. A good read:
Box to Boxes & Bubbles Below: To the boxes below me, I owe an unbroken chain of command, clear signals up and down the hierarchy, and a job description that promotes the success of the company, the unit, and the bubble in each box for which I am responsible. To use an old military motto: ?Mission first, men always.? As the box above, I clarify mission and delegate roles. As representative of those below I speak for my unit, and the bubbles in it, and fight for their interests with those above me. I provide training, coaching, and counseling to help the bubble fit the box. As a bubble, as a matter of personal style, I am a teacher. I take pleasure in seeing my subordinates outdo me. If they want my job, all they have to do it is work hard and do well; they can have my job or any better job through their achievements, and I will help them to get it. Meanwhile, I will negotiate special projects, and judge the bubble by its ability to do the job per the job description, and to successfully complete projects as assigned. When it comes to making though calls, about money and preferment or discipline and sanctions, my obligation is to delegate clearly, evaluate objectively, act decisively, and paper the appropriate files.

Move or push
From Fastcompany:
In July, the Innovation Exchange at the London Business School released the 2003 Innovation Management Survey, a 22-page report that studies best practices companies use to balance innovation and incremental improvements. Among the report's key findings:
- Innovations, not enhancements are the key to the future.
- Enhancements are more certain, whereas less than 20% of innovations are market successes.
- Innovations account for 10% of revenue.
- The lack of a structured process for innovation might cause poor performance.
- The three greatest challenges to improving innovation are the lack of entrepreneurial skills, the ability to manage and mitigate risk, and resource constraints.
- Company size doesn't matter.

Legal music
Michael Crawford suggests hitting RIAA where it really hurts -- taking away their control:
If everyone started downloading legal music instead of violating copyright with the file sharing programs, we would make short work of the RIAA, because people would start buying CDs directly from the artists and seeing their shows instead of enriching the major labels by buying CDs from the bands the labels have chosen for us to listen to. The RIAA would also have no cause to complain - these music downloads do not infringe copyright because the artists give you permission to download them.

But before I say any more about rolling out Wikis, major kudos to Paul Clifford and Joss Burnett - when we arrived in the department they were experimenting with Zope as a substrate for the intranet, and had put Zwiki in place for the wiki. But when we actually came to working through Zwiki's rules for text-formatting, we were all a bit startled - they were extraordinarily arcane and complex. So we researched the problem a bit and looked at various kinds of wiki mark-up and discovered that there was not only a massive variety of them, but also that many of them operated on completely different principles from one another.

Zen and the art of bicycle maintenance
Tomorrow I'll be spending some time fixing up the bike, putting some oil on the chain, and checking the tire pressure. You should check the pressure once a week too, if you have a bike, I for one didn't know that. :)
I'll go to the local shop as well, it's time to start looking for some good winter wheels (with spikes), and a proper headlight (the one I bought earlier was good enough to be seen by drivers and other bikers, but not really good enough to light up the road on late evenings).
Looking for hints on bicycle maintenance, I found a series of chapters on bicycle maintenance, and biking in general. Turns out the seat height is very important:
The saddle height is very important. If it's too low, you have much less strength when pedaling, and if it's too high you'll rub your thighs sore. Adjust the height until you can pedal backwards with the heels of your shoes on the pedals, with fully stretched knee but still touching the pedal when the pedal is in the bottom position, without rocking your hips. The position must be exact to about five millimeters (1/5 inch). I prefer the standard angle where a bar laid on the nose and back of the saddle, parallel to the top tube, is horizontal, but some people prefer the nose slightly up or down.
Bike computers is a must, for any bicycle or computer geek (when you know the game, numbers are one of the things used for keeping the score ;), Thomas' series about biking has a chapter on those too.
Bonus links: more on bicycle maintenance, a directory on maintenance, and a humorous look on bicycle maintenance and the book Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance. Oh, and these tools are sweet.

Zope gives Java competition
There's an article with a brief discussion of Zope vs. Java:
As the open-source movement extends its reach, a number of development environments have evolved from cool but esoteric protocols into comprehensive tools that can give long-established platforms a run for their money. One of the latest of these is Zope, an open-source application server for designing content management, portals and other custom applications. Written in the Python programming language, Zope has matured to the point where developers have begun to choose it over Java and other protocols when developing dynamic Web sites, intranets and more.
And Zope is good enough to take on Java web applications, in many respects. Zope 3 will be cleaner, and more java-application-like. The best thing about Zope? The Python programming language, which is open source, and a transparent development process.

Red Hat is suing SCO:
"We filed this complaint to stop SCO from making unsubstantiated and untrue public statements attacking Red Hat Linux and the integrity of the Open Source software development process," said Mark Webbink, General Counsel at Red Hat. "Red Hat is confident that its current and future customers will continue to realize the significant value that our Red Hat Linux platform provides without interruption."

Business is business
From the Sea of humanity:
One day at kindergarten a teacher said to the class of 5-year-olds, "I'll give $2 to the child who can tell me who was the most famous man who ever lived." An Irish boy put his hand up and said, "It was St. Patrick." The teacher said, "Sorry Sean, that's not correct." Then a Scottish boy put his hand up and said, "It was St. Andrew." The teacher replied, "I'm sorry, Hamish, that's not right either." Finally, a Jewish boy raised his hand and said, "It was Jesus Christ." The teacher said, "That's absolutely right, Marvin, come up here and I'll give you the $2." As the teacher was giving Marvin his money, she said, "You know Marvin, since you're Jewish, I was very surprised you said Jesus Christ." Marvin replied, "Yeah. In my heart I knew it was Moses, but business is business..."

In flight
I'm looking over travelling options, as I'm considering attending the Plone conference in October, in Louisiana. Would be nice to visit Erik at the same time as well, it's been a while since we've met in person, and I've never met his wife Shaylah (just talked on the phone, she's got a cute voice!). I was thinking of doing a surprise visit, but since they by that time have become parents, it's probably better to ask first. :)
Looking at various travelling options, a flight from Oslo to New Orleans to Atlanta to Oslo costs around 3000 dollars, while a flight from Stockholm to New Orleans to Atlanta to Stockholm costs around 1250. So, by taking the train or plane to Stockholm, capital of neighbouring country Sweden (which probably is around 200 dollars), I'll save 1500 dollars. Go figure.

The best and the rest
Lance Armstrong had a nasty fall today, but he still managed to win:
Following Armstrong's fall — after which Spain's Iban Mayo rammed into the back of the Texan and also fell — Ullrich had the yellow jersey within his reach with a handful of miles left.
But instead of surging ahead, the German glanced back anxiously then waited, before forming a line in a slow procession with several other riders — including Armstrong's former U.S. Postal teammate Tyler Hamilton — allowing the Texan to catch up.
"Jan's an honorable guy," Armstrong said. "He probably didn't forget that when he crashed in 2001 in what appeared to be a serious crash, I told everyone, 'We can't race until he gets back up."'

Julie's Wolf pack
One of the few books I've had time to finish reading lately is Julie's wolf pack. A really nice book, once I started reading it, I kept reading it every spare moment I had.
The book has a nice pace (some might say repetetive, but that again makes room for applying the good ol' meta filter). Would probably be excellent for some quality time reading out loud with family and friends too..
A bargain I'd say. :)

Sorting out the Mozilla buzz
The webstandards project has a lengthy article which sorts out AOLs move to give Mozilla its own organization:
First, the AOL-Microsoft settlement didn't guarantee AOL would use IE; it guaranteed that AOL could use IE royalty-free for the next seven years. AOL and everyone else can do so already; the settlement just guarantees Microsoft won't start charging AOL royalties until 2010 at least. Second, the Mozilla project didn't switch their focus from the monolithic suite to Firebird (née Phoenix) to achieve platform-independence or better support for Web standards. Both have been project goals from the first.
Finally, Ralph Mellor posited that Mozilla's ties to AOL Time Warner may have been a bad thing. He makes an interesting point, but he's forgetting one thing: the Netscape brand. Browsers aren't typically chosen by people who care about things like independence and technical superiority. Browsers are chosen by end users. As Geoffrey Moore points out in Crossing the Chasm, end users don't understand tech and don't want to. They choose technology based on what they think is safe.

Atleast we're able to laugh at ourselves
You know you've been in Norway too long when:
- You start to believe that if it weren't for Norway's efforts the world would probably collapse pretty soon.
- You can only buy your own drink at the bar even when you are with a group of people.
- Can't remember to say, "Please" and "excuse me".
- Always prepare to catch the closing door if following too closely behind somebody.
- When a stranger on the street smiles at you, you assume that: a) he is a drunk b) he is insane c) he is Australian d) he is all of the above
- Silence is fun.
- You use "mmmm" as a conversation filler.
- You think there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.
- You know Norway's results in the last three years in the Melodi Grand Prix song-contest.
- It seems nice to spend a week in a small wooden cottage up the mountains with no running water and no electricity.
- You know at least five different words for describing different kinds of snow.
- An outside temperature of 9 degrees Celsius is mild in mid June.
- You know the difference between blue and red ski wax.
- You don't fall over when walking on ice.
- You associate Friday afternoon with a trip to Vinmonopolet (government liquor store).
- You think nothing of paying 400 NOK (ca $ 80) on drinks one night.
- You know that "religious holiday" means "let's get pissed".
- You find yourself more interested in the alcohol content than in the name of the wine.
- You enjoy the taste of lutefisk (jelly-like, bad-smelling fish).
- You think it's acceptable to wrap your hot dog on a cold pancake.
- You associate warm rice porridge with Saturday and Xmas-eve.
- You can prepare fish in five different ways without cooking it.
- You don't question the habit of always making "matpakke" (sandwich in paper).
- It feels natural to wear sport clothes and backpack in the cinema as everywhere else.
- You find yourself speaking halfway Swedish with Swedes.
- You can't understand why foreigners haven't heard about Bjorn Daehlie.
- You know the meaning of life has something to do with the word "koselig" (cozy).

Mozilla gets a foundation of its own
AOL and others are funding a non-profit organization for the Mozilla project:
“As an independent organization, the Mozilla project will have even more freedom to innovate and provide meaningful choice to users on all computer environments. A competitive, standards-compliant browser suite is vitally important to maintaining freedom and innovation on the Internet, so I’m delighted to make a contribution,” commented Kapor. Kapor was the designer of Lotus 1-2-3, the “killer application” that made personal computers ubiquitous in the business world in the 1980s. He currently chairs the Open Source Applications Foundation.

Biking
I've been using my new bike for about a week now, and I'm very satisified with it. Friday I bought some more gear; a helmet and front- & taillight. I'd like to link to the website of the light supplier (the lights are cool), but it sucks, so I won't. ;)
And the seat is OK, I've gotten used to it.
Tomorrow I'll take it to the shop to get the wires adjusted. Usually this is done about a month after the bike is bought, but I've already managed to do 60 miles on it (braking and gearing a bit too much perhaps), so it has to be done now. I was thinking of adjusting the wires myself, but found it would be wiser to get some tips from the pros first, and see how they do it.

I've been trying new things lately, last Saturday I bought an espresso machine. It works, although I think the coffee needs to be grinded some more (the espresso isn't as black as you'd get in a coffee shop, and it doesn't have that dark foam).
The machine can steam milk as well, cafe au lait is simpler to make than I thought.. Strong espresso beats au lait hands down though. :)
Now, next thing on the list is dark chocolate (more cocoa, less sugar)...

Doing the right thing in the greater scheme
The happy tutor points to Community Wealth Ventures, which:
- Helps nonprofit organizations become more self-sustaining by generating revenue through business ventures and corporate partnerships.
- Helps corporations improve their bottom line through the design and implementation of community investment strategies.
That's very interesting. Maybe we'll see a shift from corporations spending lots of money on advertising (flyers littering the globe comes to mind), and instead pour it into different communities. I would be all for that.

Collaboration
Lovely Dina Mehta has a point when it comes to collaboration in weblogs:
"The joy of performing is the group sound. I can't play whatever I want whenever I want. Jazz is democratic music and everybody gets to solo but only within the context of the whole. The group is what is the most important thing. Sometimes the best thing for me to do is not to play. And to respect another's musical space. When I do solo, I still have to pay attention to what the rhythm behind me is. I can't ignore it. I have to be a part of that. Playing in a group means giving up some of your space for the group. If a band isn't playing with any interaction, I walk out because it is no fun."
That's one excellent analogy, reminds me of the swedish horses.
And speaking of collaboration, now I'm looking forward to recording a couple of songs with Ragnar, my multi-talented and very bright friend. :)

It's natural
Back from the fishing trip, which was nice. :)
Some pictures for your viewing pleasure. We caught 7 trouts on the first day on the first lake:

Standing there fishing, I found myself fascinated by the fact that it's all mountains, where the lower parts are filled with water, and the higher parts are covered with soil, gras, trees and stuff like that. If anyone drained the lake it would be empty and all the life there would disappear -- 10, 20 or 50 years later it would be flourishing with another form of life.

This was a small, round lake, maybe 100 meters across. There was a dock (unusual for lakes in Mosvik), easily accessed by walking as well as disabled, and a charge for each time you fish. That's one way to make money. :)

That's about the view you'd get looking at the ocean from our place.

Norway is nice, when it's not too cold. ;) This picture reminds me of stories of trolls I heard when I was younger. Hmmmmm.
Thanks to the Mosvik homepage for letting me show you these pictures.

Networking the metaphor
Microdoc has an interesting article up, talking about the social network that builds a blogologue.
Given all the blogologue about hyperlinks subverting hierarchy, it's ironic the shape of a viral blogologue looks like a hierarchy.
You have innovators, early adopters, hubs, and readers.
The hierarchy serves a purpose:
- innovators get off on doing and writing about it
- early adopters read blogs searching for innovative ideas (reading, discovering and writing), acts as a filter for the hub
- the hub in turn looks at early adopters, and brings interesting/popular blogologues to the masses (reading and writing and in the process translating it), the hub gets its own reward in serving numerous readers.
Readers of the hub are also likely innovators, and a-round-and-round we go.
That's my take on it, anyway.

Doc points to an article on business blogging:
First and foremost, chill. The blogosphere will not tolerate control freaks. Hand over the reins. (If the Army can do it...) Blogging wants to be free. It wants to be a lot freer than marketing and legal want it to be, not to mention the CEO. A Weblog by or about your company, product, or service will eventually contain an opinion, thought, or approach that displeases someone. Expect it, embrace it, and remain open. Blogging is informal, unstructured, and personal. It's not a corporate boilerplate.
A very insightful article. :)

Even then, it was far more concentrated in a few hands than when the Bill of Rights was written, when "the press" was a low-capital venture, and newspapers were easily launched by those who had something to say. The founding fathers hardly anticipated today's media market, in which journalism is a vehicle for mega-corporate profits, and the diversity of opinion implied in the 1st Amendment is threatened less by a king or the state and far more by the motives of media barons.
Question: What entities in the USA govern most of the money?

Doc gets the boot
Candidia Cruikshanks gives Doc the boot (to kiss that is):
Doc is so sweet to let us know what he's standing for, like we care. Maybe he sides with losers because he is one. Sell 'em out, Doc, make a billion or two, and then build a Casino with your name on it, and call it the Commons.

Small piece of the big internet
Got pointed to Soma FM (sorry about the link that didn't work), which features (amongst other things) indie, chillout (veery nice) and ambient/groove channels:
We look for music and formats that aren't available on commercial radio, or formats that are "not being done right" as Rusty puts it.
We're a listener supported, commercial free internet radio station. This means no advertising or annoying commercial interruptions. Our mission is to expose great new music to people who otherwise may never encounter it.
The internet is many-to-many... let's keep it that way.

Apologies neglected
Iran wants the US to apologize for their Al Qaeda support in the 80s:
"The Americans should present a full apology to the international community for the support they gave to Al-Qaeda," foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told reporters. The official was referring to a period in the 1980s when millions of dollars of covert US aid was channelled -- through the Pakistani secret service -- to Islamist groups battling the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.

Demolition means progress
Waters rise behind massive dam:
After 10 years of construction the Chinese authorities are closing the sluice gates on the massive Three Gorges dam to allow its reservoir to start filling up.
Quite a feat. :)

Back to basics
What kind of content is worth buying asks Dan Shafer; a quote:
Then I remembered a New York Times piece I read several years ago. The basic message was simple: Americans will not pay for information or education but they will seriously overpay for convenience. How else explain bottled water, bottled tea, individually wrapped portions of peanut butter (I'm not making that one up)?

A blog is a log is a journal
More on online publishing. A quote:
So, then ultimately, what is this difference we are talking about? Are we talking about bloggers wiping out the need for professional journalists? Or are we talking about something else? Maybe the product that each writer, the blog that the blogger writes and the news site that the journalist writes is what we are seeking to know about. Whether blogs are going to wipe out news sites? Now here we are talking two quite distinct things, we might think. That a blog site is not a news site. Many blog sites are in fact news sites, while there are also many blog sites that are not like news sites. Although you may want to label those blog sites that act a little like news sites a SuperBlog -- as Microdoc News was named by Chicago's News and Talk Radio Station WGN Radio. (Although I do wish the professional journalist who writes for the Chicago radio station would insist of his webmaster that they use permalinks as this link is going to die very shortly when it ceases to be on the main links page and goes into an archive!)
In my opinion, a blogger is a journalist of sorts. What is really a journalist? There's no standard for how to certify a person as a journalist (AFAIK), there's no standard for how an article should be published. A (commercial) newssite or newspaper is simply a legal entity with processes for publishing information.
I think that journalists will still get paid to do professional journalism 10 years from now, but the way journalists get their information, distribute it and get paid for it will change.

Publishing online
Lately there's been talks of blogosphere stories, which incidentally look a lot like the way programmers develop Open Source software. I've done some thinkering on that lately, and I think that newspapers, online or not, will have to start making use of the content in blogs if they're going to survive. There's simply too much knowledge, created by people outside of any kind of system. Use it and improve your product.

Another fish in the sea
I was going to do some pair programming with David Bain today, on the Zope Group Calendar project, but his wife went into labor (!). Hopefully all goes well (good luck David!). As for me, I'm going to spend my extra time wisely, going to the gym to swim. ;)

Matrix, continued
Wealth bondage points to a piece by See the forest, for the trees, which explains what's really going on in the US of A (and other countries as well). The doc has a point and a link too.

Matrix reloaded, the movie
Been to the movies again, this time it was The Matrix reloaded. It wasn't all that, really. ;)
It has a lot of eye candy, but it's missing some of the 'flow' from the first movie, leaving me with the feeling of seeing a series of scenes instead of one complete story.
For those of you out there who (like me) are francophile, the scene with the french dude and his hot girl is a special treat: "Cursing in french is like wiping your ass with silk". True.
I'm thinking it may be the-movie-in-between-to-make-extra-money, since it features trendy things like a music video and lots of black people. All-in-all, I rate it 4 out of 6, thanks to the tight action scenes.

Hero, the movie
I was to the movies last week, and saw Hero, a movie about a sheriff with the name Nameless who gets to visit the king after killing 3 assassins (Sky, Broken sword and Flying snow) who have been trying to kill the king. It features a good story and some really intense, colorful scenes:
- The king's choice (doesn't really have much of a choice, but hey)
- The angry mistress
- The slain cheat
The only negative thing about the whole experience was the cinema, which was too darn hot, with chairs that were too damned small, and not enough space for the legs.

Defining the blogologue
Doc points to the dynamics of a blogosphere story. I think that's what the word blogologue stands for. A dialogue between persons (and communities, companies, ++) voicing opinions, votes, reactions and summaries.
Look at the word dialogue for example:
4: a discussion intended to produce an agreement; "the buyout negotiation lasted several days"; "they disagreed but kept an open dialogue"; "talks between Israelis and Palestinians" [syn: {negotiation}, {talks}]
Very cool stuff. ;)

Get ready for some seducation
Get on the Clue train, or be a good monkey and do your job. I enjoyed school the first 6 years, because we had a fantastic teacher who challenged us, provoking thought, and let the most eager students create assignments for the rest of the class. After that, it was mostly downhill. Doc says don't treat kids as storage containers, I say don't treat them like garbage bins.

Internet explorer, fuck it
I know this site can look weird in Internet Explorer. It's correct XHTML and CSS, looks good in Opera, Mozilla and other browsers.
Guess it isn't in their interest to have a proper browser.

Things change
Lawrence Lessig has got a post up on competition and the internet. Couldn't agree more. The faster the protected-to-public cycle goes, the faster all kinds of development will go. Sure people may create great stuff (able to compete with things offered by a-random-business-venture), and make it available for free. As a business, you're able to take that, and improve it. What's the problem here?
What the music, movie and just about every other industry hostile to the internet are saying is that "We are going to limit your freedom, because we want to survive". Personally I think a business should live on the mercy of it's customers, not controlling what the customers can and cannot do.
