Snappy

I've been skipping reading blogs and feeds for a while (using Bloglines for feed reading, works great).

Anyway, after reading Mozillazine's post on the latest Firefox beta:

  http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=23077

and seeing you could install a separate version of Firefox without it messing around with the Firefox version I use regularly I thought why not.

Here's the link to the portable app version:

  http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/test

I'm playing around with Vista these days, and I don't have the time (or inclination) to learn about how to backup the default Firefox profile so yeah, it seemed like a good idea.

What can I say, Firefox 3 rocks. It looks good, and it is fast as hell. Props to all the developers for this one. If I had to use one word to describe Firefox 3 it would be snappy.

I've seen Vista get a lot of flack, but it isn't that bad actually. A bit slow perhaps, and it gives the BSOD every time I try to connect to Nokia Communicator E90, but otherwise it's OK.

Oh well, have to test new things I guess, back to Ubuntu soon. :)

Neato

Firefox is spell-checking for me as I type into this text-box. I upgraded to Firefox 2.0 a day or two ago and didn't notice it until now. How cool.

Another cool tool

Well, I discovered a new cool tool for Firefox; the Video Downloader

  https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2390/

it enables downloading movies from various sites that embed video objects, ranging from flash encoded movies to just about anything you can think of. Saves my day, as some movies only work in the mplayer, with downloaded files (and digging through HTML to find the download URL is a PITA).

Not smokin'

I was looking around for Thunderbird extensions, and couldn't find many. Before I stumbled over the Thunderbird extensions link on

  https://addons.mozilla.org/

which was

  https://addons.mozilla.org/?application=thunderbird

there are hundreds of different extensions for Thunderbird, many of which add some feature that I find useful, but the coolest one was Quitomzilla

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?applicati...

an extension that shows you how many cigarettes you've avoided and how much money you've saved after quitting with smoking.

I used to smoke, guess I quit somewhere around 2002 so I've saved just over 10000 dollars not smoking. Lately I've had a minor urge to start smoking again for some reason, so stumbling over this extension was a good thing. Not smoking 30000 cigarettes over the last years has certainly improved my health, now I'm spending that money on bikes, the gym and other useful stuff, and have money to spare.

(It works in Firefox and Mozilla as well.)

I wonder

A Microsoftie asked me how Firefox could be installed in 'silence mode', probably without any installation screens.. wonder if that's possible.

Firefox on speed

Just downloaded a new extension for Firefox, called Fasterfox.  It shaves off 200ms to 2000ms on each page load here with the Turbo Charged feature as far as I can tell.

No description available

It also has an advanced preference settings option which enables tweaking of the relevant speed options and something called pre-fetch.. not sure I like the pre-fetch feature, think people have tried something like that before and got unpopular with webmasters for doing it.

Anyway, having it on the default setting Turbo Charged works here, pages are just a little bit faster and more fun to work with.

Feels like I'm sitting on a fast computer on a very broad connection.  :)

Bittorrent in Firefox

What if Firefox had native support for Bittorrent? Would work for distributing Music, Videos, Firefox updates et al.. Take the load of popular sites.. could connect automatically to a shared cache for example for slashdotters.. How much would extra resources would it take, and how long would it take to implement it?

Asa mentions a new extension that enables resizing of text areas in Firefox, and it just works. Nice.

Got it

I've been looking for ways to reduce the strain on my hands lately, as I've had some symptoms of RSI and CTS.

I still love music though, and download a lot from allofmp3 (http://blogologue.com/blog_entry?id=www.allofmp3.com), which has a somewhat repetetive interface for downloading files.

So, FlashGot came in handy, it's a Firefox extension which enables downloads of all links in a webpage, or all links in the currently selected text. Installing it, restarting Firefox, going to the music download page on allofmp3 and pressing Ctrl+F3 enabled me to download 25 songs at a time, using a program that was already installed called Aria (which I tried earlier, but forgot about).

This tool, combined with a shift from right-handed to left-handed mouse, Dvorak keyboard layout and a better posture should improve things quite a bit.

It's great when technologies such as simple HTML are widely used, so that simple client-side extensions can simplify the daily lives of regular and (somewhat) disabled users.

I didn't know that Firefox could find & install the flash plugin automatically when it was required from a page if it wasn't already installed. That's pretty cool. And user friendly.

Easy downloads in Firefox

I've found a new cool Firefox extension, called OpenDownload:

  http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?applicatio...

it enables files to be opened directly in your favourite application,
without prompting to confirm/select the application first.

Asa appreciates our articles:

One of the best Firefox articles (actually, I'd call it a "walk-through"), over at Nidelven IT, has been updated. Do give An introduction to Mozilla Firefox, part 1 a second (or first) look. It's filled with great screenshots and describes much of what you need to know to get the most out of Firefox.

Firefox web developer extension

Via Mozilla Update I found a cool extension for Firefox, called Web Developer.  It adds a number of features to Firefox, some of which I found to be very useful:

Saving email

A lot of people are having problems with email these days, spam, viruses, software that doesn't work. Dave is having a problem now. How about giving Thunderbird a spin? An introduction (including installation instructions) is available here.
